What is AI Max for Google Ads
AI Max is a new feature in Google Ads that bundles every smart AI option for Search campaigns into one workflow. It is built for accounts where keyword-based targeting alone is no longer pulling its weight.
What sits inside the bundle:
Keywordless targeting via AI, so Google can match intent beyond what you have explicitly typed in
Dynamically generated ad copy, drawn from your landing page, your existing ads and current search trends
Smart URL expansion to the most relevant landing page on your site
Brand context and location intent controls, so the algorithm stays on topic and inside your guardrails
Google's own test data: advertisers who enable AI Max see on average 14% more conversions at equal CPA. For accounts still leaning heavily on exact match keywords, that uplift climbs to 27%. The reason is straightforward: those accounts had the most untapped intent that AI Max can now reach.
Why AI Max already matters
1. You reach customers your keyword list never could
With AI Max, you go further than your manually built keyword list. The AI analyzes your existing campaigns, assets and conversion patterns, then combines that with broader intent signals and live search behavior. The result: your ads show on more relevant searches than your keyword list alone would ever capture. Including long tail queries you would never have written down.
Example. You advertise on "running shoes for women". A user searches for "best shoes to train for a marathon in summer". AI Max recognizes the underlying intent (running training) and shows your ad. Your old keyword set would never have matched that query. AI Max does.
2. Your ads adapt to the user's intent automatically
AI Max generates headlines and descriptions based on your landing page, your current ad copy and recent search trends. The output is dynamic, context-aware and relevant to the exact query a user typed.
Pair that with Final URL Expansion and visitors land on the right page on your site automatically: a category page, a product page or a guide. Whatever matches their intent best.
Relevance equals higher conversion rates. That is where the 14% to 27% lift actually comes from.
3. You keep control and visibility
AI Max does not mean handing the keys to the algorithm and walking away. You keep meaningful control and you get better reporting than the old keyword-based setup ever gave you:
Location intent targeting per ad group
Brand controls for inclusion or exclusion
New reporting on search terms, headlines, clicks, conversions and asset performance
Real time tracking with smart URL parameters
When you can start
AI Max is now available to advertisers across the Benelux. We have been activating it on client accounts since the beta opened in mid 2025. Across the accounts we manage, the pattern matches Google's published numbers: accounts that were still keyword-heavy see the biggest lift, while accounts already running on broad match and smart bidding see a more modest but consistent improvement.
The migration matters more than usual because Google is phasing out Dynamic Search Ads (DSA) in favor of AI Max. If DSA is still a core part of your setup, this is the moment to migrate. Waiting until the deadline is the most common reason an account loses impression share during a platform transition.
We have written more about that shift in our Google AI Overviews and AI Mode insight, which covers the wider context for how Google is moving from keyword matching to intent matching across both Ads and Search.
Three steps to get ready this quarter
If you have not turned AI Max on yet, here is the order that works best:
Audit your current account structure. Specifically: how much of your spend is still on exact and phrase match keywords versus broad match and smart bidding. Accounts that are exact-match-heavy will see the biggest lift from AI Max (up to 27%), but they also need the cleanest data layer before activation. Fix tracking, fix conversion definitions, then turn AI Max on.
Pick the right campaign to test first. AI Max works best when the algorithm has clean signal to learn from. Start with a campaign that has stable conversion volume (50+ conversions per month is the rough floor), a known audience and a clear landing page set. Avoid testing AI Max on a brand new launch where everything is shifting at the same time.
Set up your brand controls and location intent before activation, not after. The lift compounds when these are configured properly from day one. Letting AI Max run wide without guardrails is the fastest way to waste budget on out-of-market or off-brand queries. Set the rails first. Open the throttle second.
The bottom line
AI Max is not an experiment. It is the new standard for Search advertising. The numbers Google published (14% more conversions at equal CPA, 27% for exact-match-heavy accounts) match what we see in real Benelux accounts every week. The accounts that move first capture the lift first.
As with every Google rollout of the last five years, the value is not just in activating the feature. It is in setting it up strategically: clean account structure, clean tracking, intentional guardrails, and a partner who watches the platform changes day to day so your team does not have to.
We participate in Google's beta tests, monitor placements in real time and adjust strategy as the AI environment evolves. Search, Shopping or Performance Max, the goal is the same: keep your campaigns aligned with where Google's algorithm actually buys today, not where it used to two years ago.
